10 questions about your Heritage

Whether you’re looking back at the last 15 years or 150 years, these questions will help you organize your thoughts and capture a few fun slices of life. Remember, the focus of this album is on the past. So answer each of theses questions form memoires of you childhood. As you read each question jot down a few thoughts on index cards or on the computer.

1        What’s your oldest memory? Stretch way back is it an early school memory? Is it an image of playing with preschool friends? Maybe a toddler memory of helping Mom? Keep digging and see how far back you can go!

2      What was school like? Which schools did you attend? Do you remember your teachers? Your classmates? What were your classrooms like? What did you play at recess? What were your favourite subjects? Which ones would you have skipped if you’d been the type to skip classes? Where did your parents attend school? Your grandparents? How was school different for them that it was for you?

3      How did you spend you spare time? Mom and Dad called it wasting time but you knew better. Was it video games? Television? Radio? Comic books? Were you creating things? Destroying things? Baking things? Was it fast cars? Fast horses?

4      What was your favourite holiday and how did your family celebrate? What were the special traditions? Special costumes? Special meals? Where did these traditions come from? Was there somewhere specific you would go to celebrate? Who would come to visit?

5       What was family time like? What things would you do together? Where was ‘home’? What was it like? Did your extended family get together often? Where? What would happen then? What sorts of traditions are passed down in you family? What role did faith play in your family?

6      What sports and games did you play? How did you get started in sports? What positions did you play? How great were you? What do you remember about your teammates? Your coaches? What about games with the family? Any tradition of cut-throat pinochle or cribbage?

7       You were quite the fashion plate, weren’t you? Tell us the stories about the horrible off-brand jeans your mom bought for you. What about the hand-me downs? Tell us about the first piece of clothing you bought with your own money. Any truly historic clothing in your family? Did you get married in Grandma’s wedding dress?

8       What’s cooking? What were you favourite home-cook meals? Where there any traditions foods in your family you wish you could go back in time and try once more? Do you have any cherished recipes from Grandma? Where you a picky eater? What were you favourite snacks? Where was your favourite place to go out and eat? What would you order?

9      What was the greatest advancement of your lifetime so far? The polio vaccine? The personal computer? Golden Oreo cookies? What’s changed today to make the world a better place then when you were a kid? On the flip side, what’s the biggest thing that’s just not as great it was back in the good old days?

10    Who was your favourite storyteller? Who’s the person your family always turned to for a good story? Which older relative could always sit back and spin a yarn? Give your album a title more reach by including one of your favourite stories of your family as it was told to you.

    Youre so cool! I dont suppose I’ve read anything like this before. So nice to find somebody with some original thoughts on this subject. Really thank you for starting this up. This website is something that is needed on the web, someone with a little originality. Useful job for bringing something new to the internet!
